Dentures

Missing most or all of your teeth can make it difficult to eat and speak, impacting your quality of life.  Dentures are prosthetic devices that can restore your oral function and appearance by replacing your missing teeth. Dr. Michael J. Appleton and Dr. Christopher Braud in Slidell, LA, can craft custom dentures for a beautiful and functional smile.

Implant-Supported Dentures Carry Many Benefits

Bone Health

Implants are the only restorative dentistry procedure that can stop and prevent jawbone loss. When you are missing a tooth, the jaw no longer receives stimulation from the tooth root. Without that stimulation, the bone can begin to deteriorate. Dental implants act as prosthetic tooth roots to provide that stimulation and keep your jaw healthy.

Maximum Stability

Because traditional dentures rest on the gums and rely on adhesives, there is the possibility for them to slip. Implant-supported dentures are different. Dental implants are surgically placed directly into the jawbone, and your dentures are then secured to the implants. There is no risk of them slipping off your gums when you chew or talk.

Denture Candidates

During your initial consultation at our Slidell dental practice, your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for dentures. You may be a good candidate if:

You Have Sufficient Jawbone

You must have sufficient jawbone to qualify for traditional or implant-supported dentures. If you suffer from existing bone loss, you may qualify for the All-on-4® method, which uses four strategically placed dental implants. However, if your bone loss is severe, you may need bone grafting before you qualify for dentures.

You Are in Good Oral Health

You must be free from gum disease or other oral health concerns, such as tooth decay in remaining teeth. Oak Harbor Family Dentistry offers comprehensive treatment options, including general and restorative dentistry, to improve your oral health before dentures. This ensures a healthy foundation for your new smile.

You Have Multiple Missing Teeth

You must suffer from multiple missing teeth to qualify for dentures. This often means at least three or more consecutive missing teeth. If you only have a few missing teeth, we have other treatment options available to help restore your smile, such as a dental bridge.

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at our Slidell dental practice, one of our skilled dentists will examine your mouth and discuss your concerns and goals. If dental implants are right for you, your dentist will refer you to one of our trusted oral surgeons for implant placement.

Preparatory Treatment

If you need preparatory treatment such as tooth extractions or implant placement, this must be done first. Your mouth will be given time to heal before treatment proceeds.

Impressions

If you do not need preparatory treatment, or once you are healed from treatment, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth. Our practice uses digital impressions. These eliminate the need for messy and often uncomfortable putty impressions. These images are sent to the lab where your custom dentures will be created.

Fitting

After about four to five weeks, your dentures should arrive at our Slidell, LA, dental practice. You will have an appointment for a fitting. This will allow your dentist to make adjustments to ensure proper fit and comfort. If you are receiving implant-supported dentures, your dentist will secure your dentures to the implants.
All that is left to do is enjoy your new smile! If you have questions about the denture treatment timeline, drop us a message.

You will not find a better equipped or better staffed dentist around here. The place is modern, clean, and everyone that works there is cool, especially Dr. Appleton. They are not even in my insurance network and I still go there if that tells you anything.
